Family Wall Art

I love my family.  I love art.  I love music.  I love books.  For four years we have lived in our house with a huge blank space above our bed.  For four years I have dreamed about what I might want to put there.  I knew I wanted it to be something special because that’s the last thing I see before climbing into bed.  I wanted it to be peaceful, pretty, and have a special meaning to me.  Some of my friends are incredibly talented photographers, others pick perfect prints, me-I was struggling.

One day, when my mother in law was in town, I let my kids go creative with aluminum foil and tape and our recycling bin.  We do this often.  My kids love playing with aluminum foil.  When they were all done and we were picking up, I noticed that one of their creations looked like a delicate grasshopper/cricket.  I immediately told my daughter that I was going to save it and put it in a painting above my bed someday.

So…main piece for above bed project, done!  But what else?

I then saw a handprint picture someone had made where they made a sunshine and I was set!

I decided to make the painting above our bed encorporate my family’s favorite things; the story ‘quick as a cricket’ and the songs ‘you are my sunshine’ and ‘sunny side of life’.

The night before I painted the whole background gray.

I had my kids do sunshine and grass out of handprints and footprint.  I hot glues the aluminum foil cricket to finish off the main piece.

After we had all the painting done, I went through and wrote a few of the lyrics from ‘sunny side of life’ and ‘you are my sunshine’ on the border of the painting.

I love love love this simple project and cannot wait to hang it.  It was definitely worth the wait!

Hi! My name is Dominique and I'm lucky enough to be the wife to my True Love and mother to a little girl and a little boy. I grew up in the Midwest but have loved living in NC, our new home. I'm actually an Industrial Engineer by schooling, but am now a domestic engineer(Stay-at-home-Mom) and feel very blessed to have this job. I have always loved the challenge in making the most of things...whether it's figuring out that a filing cabinet , a $10 piece of countertop and a few scraps of wood can be turned into a desk, that a curtain sheer, some ribbon, and a square piece of fabric can be transformed into an Elsa-like dress, or how to provide an interesting lunch for my little girl who is in a peanut free classroom. I love to figure things out and to create. I hope you enjoy reading my posts. I hope that my posts will inspire you to create. I hope that with my posts you will see that They Will Love Your Effort, whether things turn our perfect or not;-)
